Yangon, March 4 – members of the Kachin State government were laid off from their positions because of their involvement with illegal importation of many ground carrier vehicles and digging machines from China for the purpose of jade excavation in the Hpakant region of the State.

Those that received the sack included director general of the customs department, U Tun Thein, and director general of the Ministry of Commerce, U Nyunt Aung, along with some other members of the regional government, is it known.
“It would be known better if you asked the Ministry of Home Affairs or a person of responsibility at union level of the government. I have no mandate to talk about this case,” said Lajon Ngan Sai, Minister of Kachin State.

President U Thein Sein ordered an investigation into the case of the illegal importation of vehicles and machines which started in December, 2015 after which the aforementioned individuals were fired from their positions in January of this year as a direct result of the investigation.

Former captain, U Aung Soe, is currently acting as a temporary substitute to the vacant position of U Nyunt Aung, while a director general of Myanmar Insurance has taken over the position formally filled by U Tun Thein.
